Nook Privacy Policy

Nook is designed as a local-first AI companion app. The app keeps companion conversations, memories, and relationship state on your device by default. Nook does not collect your chat messages, companion memories, prompts, generated responses, or personal profile information for tracking, analytics, advertising, or sale.
Information Nook Handles
Nook may handle the following limited information when you use the app:
- Gender, if you choose to provide it.
- Date of birth, used to verify age eligibility and personalize the companion experience. Stored locally on your device.
- Local app content stored on your device, such as companion conversations, companion memories, companion state, and relationship progress.
- Subscription status and renewal information provided by Apple's StoreKit.
- iCloud sync status when you enable iCloud Sync.
- Device integrity and anti-abuse information used for service protection, including App Attest, DeviceCheck, an app installation identifier, and active subscription proof when available.
- Technical information needed for app reliability and service protection, such as app version, request timing, response status, and quota state.
Nook does not currently use third-party advertising SDKs, sell personal information, or collect chat content for analytics.
Local-First Storage
By default, Nook stores app data on your device using local storage. This includes companion conversations, companion state, relationship progress, extracted memories, conversation summaries, and vector embeddings used for memory retrieval. Nook does not collect this content from your device for analytics or advertising.
Deleting the app or clearing its local data removes data stored only on that device. If iCloud Sync is enabled, some data may also exist in your private iCloud account until you remove it through iCloud or app data deletion controls.
AI Processing
Nook does not collect chat messages, companion memories, prompts, generated responses, or other private user-generated content for analytics, advertising, training, or profiling.
When an AI feature needs processing to generate a companion response, moderate chat input, create a summary, or create a memory embedding, Nook processes only the content needed to provide that feature. AI request content is not used for advertising or event tracking.
All user message text is screened by a content moderation service before each companion response. Messages that match a safety category are additionally analyzed by a safety classification model to determine context and urgency. This processing is done solely to protect users and is not used for advertising, analytics, or training. No message content is stored server-side beyond the duration of the request.
Custom styling values entered during avatar creation are screened for safety, relevance to the selected avatar field, and attempts to manipulate the generation system. Rejected values are not sent to the image-generation provider.
Nook does not use chat content, memories, prompts, generated responses, or image content for advertising or event tracking.
iCloud Sync
iCloud Sync is optional and requires an active Nook+ subscription. When enabled, Nook syncs supported app data through Apple's iCloud and CloudKit services so your local Nook data can be available on devices signed into the same Apple ID.
iCloud data is associated with your Apple ID and governed by Apple's privacy terms. Nook does not receive your Apple ID from iCloud Sync.
Subscriptions
Nook uses StoreKit to display subscription options and check whether Nook+ is active. Apple processes subscription purchases. Nook receives subscription entitlement information needed to unlock paid features, but does not receive your full payment card details.
Photos and Camera
Nook may request access to your camera or photo library for two purposes:
- Profile picture: You may set a profile picture using your camera or photo library. This image is stored locally on your device and may be shared with your companion to personalize the experience.
- Image messages: You may send images to companions during conversation. Images sent this way are processed by Mistral AI to generate a response and are not stored server-side beyond the duration of the request.
Camera and photo library access is only requested when you choose to use these features. Image content is not used for advertising, analytics, or training.
Notifications
Nook may use local notifications for proactive companion messages or scheduled reminders. Notification content is generated by the app or companion experience and delivered through the device's notification system. You can manage notification permissions in iOS Settings.
Firebase Crash Reporting and Usage Analytics
Nook uses Firebase Crashlytics and limited Firebase usage analytics to improve reliability and understand high-level feature usage.
Crash reporting and event analytics are limited to:
- Crash diagnostics, such as crash traces, app version, device model, operating system version, and technical logs needed to diagnose reliability issues.
- Non-private product events, such as screen opens, button taps, subscription paywall impressions, feature availability states, coarse relationship progression, and coarse performance or quota events.
- Age range derived from your locally stored date of birth, used only as aggregated analytics context. Nook does not send your exact date of birth to Firebase Analytics.
Relationship progression analytics may record that a built-in companion persona reached or changed a relationship stage. It does not include chat message text, companion memory content, prompts, generated responses, images, gender, precise personal details, or the private reason for the progression.
Event tracking does not include chat message text, companion memory content, avatar images, image messages, gender, exact date of birth, precise personal details, prompts, generated responses, or private user-generated content. Nook does not use Firebase Analytics for advertising tracking.
How Information Is Used
Nook uses information to:
- Provide companion chat, memory, gender preference, and relationship features.
- Generate AI responses, summaries, and memory embeddings.
- Sync data across your devices when iCloud Sync is enabled.
- Manage subscriptions and paid feature access.
- Protect backend services from abuse and enforce quota limits.
- Improve reliability and diagnose issues.
- Understand high-level feature usage through privacy-preserving analytics.
Sharing
Nook may share limited information with:
- Apple, for StoreKit subscriptions, iCloud Sync, DeviceCheck, App Attest, notifications, and platform services.
- Mistral AI, for chat input moderation (Mistral Moderation), safety classification of flagged messages (Ministral 8B), AI response generation (Mistral Small), conversation summarization (Ministral 3B), and memory embedding (Mistral Embedding). Nook's backend validates each request using App Attest, a user identifier, and subscription status before forwarding to Mistral AI. Per Mistral AI's Data Processing Addendum, your data is not used to train their models. Mistral AI operates under EU data protection law.
- Firebase, for Crashlytics and limited usage analytics within the limits described above.
Nook does not sell your personal information and does not share or collect your chat content for advertising or analytics.
Retention
Local app data remains on your device until you delete it, delete the app, or use app controls that remove it. iCloud-synced data may remain in your iCloud account until removed from iCloud or from synced app data.
Backend retention is limited to technical records necessary to operate the service, enforce quotas, detect abuse, debug failures, and comply with legal obligations. Nook does not retain chat content for analytics, advertising, training, or profiling.
Your Choices
You can:
- Choose whether to provide gender.
- Disable iCloud Sync in Nook settings.
- Manage iCloud data through Apple ID and iCloud settings.
- Manage camera, photo library, and notification permissions in iOS Settings.
- Cancel or manage subscriptions through Apple.
- Delete the app to remove local-only app data from the device.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal information Nook holds about you. Because Nook stores data locally on your device, most data can be accessed or deleted directly through the app or by deleting the app itself.

Children
Nook is not intended for users under 16. Do not use Nook if you are under 16.
Changes
This policy may be updated as Nook changes. Material changes should be reflected in the app, hosted policy page, App Store privacy labels, and release notes when appropriate.
